İznik Çinilerinde "Şemse" Formu

Abstract

In this article we discussed the semse form that we know to have beer? used on tiles during the second half of the 16th century. In order to specify certain features and design principles, we firstly handled semse as an ornamented motif, secondly we examined its location in the design environment of the tiles. It is clear that semse was quite popular in all Turkish traditional art branches but the tile samples of the second half of the 16th century prove that this form was mostly developed and used with the well known multi-colored red underglazing technique. At that time rich motifs and compositions were designed in the court studios and were produced at Iznik workshops. With no doubt, semse forms are also reflecting the same principals of the period with their motifs and perfect design structures in the compositions
