Abstract

THE LUMINOUSNESS OF DARKNESS: A RESEARCH ON THE HISTORICAL, PSYCHOANALYTICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL DIMENSIONS OF MELANCHOLY In this work the relationship of the concept of melancholy with art, creativity and especially with literature is being problematised. The relationship between melancholy and creativity which is asserted by Aristotle and Theophrast, is being discussed in Walter Benjamin’s intellectual activity and Franz Kafka’s literature. By mentioning briefly the history of melancholy concept in the context of creativity, the analysises developed by Sigmund Freud on this concept are being analysed with a critical view and the ideas about the metropole culture developed by Georg Simmel are also problematised, new life styles developed within modernity are being discussed in the context of period and work of Charles Baudelaire and its relations with melancholy are being considered. Consequently it’s asserted that melancholy can transform into a rich experience and a kind of field of creating subjectivity. The comparative work scan method is used in this work.
