God’s Existence and the Uniqueness Claim

Abstract

There has been a revival of interest in arguments for God’s uniqueness. There have been several attempts to reconsider and reconstruct medieval discussions as to whether there is only one god. This chapter focuses on a specific argument for divine uniqueness, a famous argument within the Islamic kal?m tradition, known as “mutual hindrance by two omnipotent beings.” I shall reconstruct Sa’d al-Din al-Taft?z?n?‘s version of this argument by making use of possible world semantics. I propose to extend the discussions around it by relating it to the general way to argue for the existence of God in the kal?m tradition and responding to the objections that have been directed to it. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Mohammad Saleh Zarepour.
