The effects of socio-economic change on vernacular architecture

Abstract

Change in social life and functional differentiation also bring along the usage of traditional housing. In the example of Bursa province, indoor sericulture, which is considered as an important economical occupation and a social activity between 16th and 19th century especially in rural settlement, became an occupation which was waived slowly depending on the changes on economic and social relations by the end of 19th century and had a change in spatial structure of traditional houses cultivating silkworm. In this study, it is aimed to determine spatial constitution of traditional houses cultivating silkworm and the current situation of silkworm production structures by the end of silkworm production and to certificate their changes undergone.
