dc.description.abstract | The design of structures for earthquake resistance requires a capacity design approach to ensure that the relative strengths of members and modes of failure are such that in event of a major earthquake yielding only occurs at chosen region of the structure which are detailed for adequate ductility. Earthquake resistance of concrete structures depends on either extreme brute strength of the structure, as in nuclear power plants or some buildings with numerous concrete bearing walls or the ductile performance of the lateral force resisting system under extreme loads. This is because seismic resistant design is economical only if design loads are maintained fictitiously low and ductile framing members that resist the much greater actual earthquake loads. Concrete shear walls can also be effectively reinforced and detailed for ductile performance. Resistance must be for the maximum possible load or force that can generated, non-the load or force calculated based on code prescribed lateral loads (10).
