Social Discourse Of Bosphorus Bridges In Istanbul With Their Connecting And Segregating Roles

Abstract

Connecting seperate physical spaces is not a unique function of bridges, they also construct mental counterparts in the form of intersection nodes of various linkage roads. Thus, it is possible to observe integrating and segregating roles of bridges in the mental world as well as in real life. Therefore it is very intriguing to look at the discourse developed on the both bridges built in Istanbul Bosphorus as well as social/spatial outcomes they are causing. Even though projects and construction of both bridges mentioned above designed abroad, becoming national symbols in our minds and strong emphasis on their necessity for Istanbul facilitated by this language and discourse. Social/spatial effects of these bridges are generally neglected in the shadow of this discourse. In this article it is going to be analysed the nature of the language and the discourse created on both bosphorus bridges and it is going to be debated their real and virtual functions.
