NEW PERSPECTIVES, APPROACHES AND THEIR CONTEMPORARY COUNTERPARTS
Contemporary art, always open to surprises and experimentation, continues to evolve through multiple directions. It is being produced, consumed, and discussed within an ever-expanding spectrum. Art constantly renews itself — from new materials to alternative forms of communication, from interactive installations to computer games, from spatial approaches to perceptual paradigms, and from reflections on urban and natural issues of the new millennium to emerging subjects and manifestos.
Through biennials, galleries, auctions, advertising, sponsorships, awards, educational institutions, and a heterogeneous institutional structure, trends in contemporary art are spreading globally. This vast world of art production, stretching from the financial constraints to the intellectual independence of the artist, plays a central role in the history of contemporary art — sometimes embracing and at other times taming alternative production channels.
Curatorship, criticism, and theory have never been so transparently and closely intertwined with artistic production. Contemporary art, with all its complex and layered dimensions, confronts us daily with new agendas and debates.
In the new millennium, this dynamic and multifaceted movement calls for new questions and fresh answers, each deserving emphasis in their own right. CONTEMP ART '14 opens its doors to the styles and approaches of artists from diverse geographies, identities, and artistic inclinations, while also welcoming institutions, intellectual frameworks, and the roots of contemporary art since the 1960s.
Adopting a critical perspective, the 3rd CONTEMP ART Conference will be held on April 24–25, 2014, with the support of DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center) and hosted by MSGSÜ (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University).
